I don’t know why Turkish food isn’t world famous. Why aren’t there Turkish restaurants in all the capital cities of other countries? I never saw any in Perth.

Mornings are long and gruelling (I mean, hard work) with classes going from 9.30 am through to 1.30 pm. By then we are tired and very hungry.
Some days we head out of the office and turn left to the little restaurant right next door for soup (corba) and the special thin Turkish pizza called lahmacun.
Other days we turn right to the restaurant called “Yedi Bolge”. The name means ’seven regions’, and the restaurant serves food from the seven regions of Turkey.

A trip to the Turkish Islands

We live on the coast of the Sea of Marmara, so it’s just a ferry trip across to the nearby Turkish Islands - a popular destination among Istanbul-ites this time of year.

Everyone told us it’s beautiful out in the island - but then we have had years of island life on a beautiful tropical island … so we are not easily impressed.

We got up early-ish, hiked down to the sea-bus (14 minutes) and went across to Kadıköy, on the Asian side, ready to catch a ferry to the islands.

At Kadıköy there is this strange structure. In winter it was just an open frame, but now they have the balloon in place and apparently you can take a ride in that blue thing at the bottom. We have seen it rising straight up, and then they pull it back down again after Read more..

Even people who live and work in Turkey have birthdays. Life goes on.

So we can’t keep with the usual time-honoured family traditions - a family get-together, and a photo taken while (looking daft and) blowing out the mandatory candles on the mandatory cake.

We thought about having a party or ‘do’ of some sort here in our apartment - we have plenty of space and everything. But almost everyone we know smokes heavily. To be polite they would go out onto our balcony… So I had this vision of a large crowd of people on our tiny balcony, and maybe a collapsed balcony.

A month ago, on the day when the company threatened to pay us late and we decided not to work until things were right, we all went to a little cake cafe in town, called Edo’s. It was a good time together. So we decided to do that again.

When we were on the train the other day we noticed an interesting looking building, and we decided we would come back later and check it out.

There it is, the big round glass building with “Olivium” on top.
I found out on the internet that Olivium is an “outlet centre”, shopping mall, and has some cinemas. And it also said that this building was in Zeytinburnu.

So today, with no classes, we got on the train … and when we got to Zeytinburnu, only two stops down, we got off again. We hadn’t been able to see the shopping centre from the train, but we nevertheless headed off where we thought it would be.

I have no idea how old our apartment block is, or any of the buildings around here. They look pretty old to me, but then we did see buildings in China that looked old and derelict from the moment the builders completed their work, so who can tell?

I am not sure that our apartment block is sound. I’m fairly sure that we are leaning just slightly. Whenever Peter uses his weights and then puts them down, they straightaway roll to one side of the room. None of the doors can be closed properly, and when we pull the bedroom door almost closed and then let it go, it swings back and forth about five times of its own accord - I’m guessing it just doesn’t hang straight.

Another Birthday. Another chocolate cake.

Yeah its a bit mean taking a photo of someone blowing out their candles - but it’s always been traditional in our family, and Charlotte is almost our daughter.

Charlotte is a Beşiktaş fan - one of the local football teams (not actually the winning team). So we got her a 2 000 piece jigsaw puzzle with a picture of the stadium … a few happy hours.

She’s looking forward to going home to the UK soon, though.

Abhazya, Gürcistan ile ilişkilerini kesiyor
Gürcistan’dan bağımsızlığını ilan eden, Abhazya, Gürcistan ile tüm ilişkilerini kesme yönünde karar aldı.

Abhazya lideri Sergey Bağapş, güvenlik konseyi toplantısından sonra yaptığı açıklamada, bölgede meydana gelen patlamaların birbiriyle bağlantılı olduğunu belirterek, ”Tiflis’in hayata geçirdiği devlet terörü yüzünden, bu ülkeyle tüm ilişkilerin kesilmesine karar verdiklerini” kaydetti.

Bağapş, Abhazya’nın Gagra, Sohumi ve son olarak Gali kentinde meydana gelen patlamalarda Gürcistan’ın eli olduğunu öne sürdü ve tüm bu olaylar karşısında sessiz kalamayacaklarını ifade etti.

Hırsızların kazdığı tünelin girişi aranıyor
Başkent’te Ziraat Bankası şubesinde dün gerçekleşen soygunun ardından, hırsızların kazdığı tünelin girişi aranmaya devam ediliyor.

Sivil savunma ve polis ekipleri tarafından yapılan çalışmalara bugün sabah saatlerinden itibaren devam edildi. Ankara Büyükşehir Belediyesi’nden getirilen kepçe ile çevrede kazı çalışmaları başlatıldı.

Edinilen bilgiye göre, Ankara’nın Balgat Ziyabey Caddesi üzerinde bulunan Ziraat Bankası Balgat Şubesi’nin sabah saatlerinde alarmının çalması ile birlikte olay yerine gelen polis ekipleri, banka görevlileri ile birlikte yaptığı incelemede, bankaya tünel kazılarak girildiğini tespit etti.

Bankada yapılan incelemelerde hırsızların 11 özel kasayı çaldıkları tespit edildi. Bankaya girilen tünelin ucunu tespit edemeyen polis ekipleri, sivil savunma ekiplerinden yardım istedi. Tünelin girişini tespit etmekt için önce tünele gaz bombası atıldı. Gaz bombasından bir sonuç alınamayınca bu defa ASKİ ekipleri tünele tazyikli su sıktı.
